Boys vs. Girls - Do you have a preference?

There seems to be a trend of people preferring a female puppy over the male puppies. Many people say that’s all they’ve ever had is a girl. “Boys always lift their leg and pee on everything. They are also humping things all the time.” This statement is FALSE for puppies that are NEUTERED before sexual maturity & not exposed to females in heat. Neutered male puppies, usually before 9mo old, will NOT display humping or mating type behaviors. These behaviors are learned by mature male dogs who have been around at least 1 unspayed female in heat. Once this mating behavior is assimilated, neutering your older, adult male dog does not usually stop this behavior. Unless you’re planning on breeding your boy then you should definitely get him neutered while he’s young!! Read more about overall general temperament differences between boys & girls:

A FEMALE Aussie tends to say "LOVE ME"

A MALE Aussie usually says “I LOVE YOU"

FEMALES: Many people believe that GIRL dogs make better pets. Most of the calls we receive asking about our pups are wanting a "sweet little girl". They don't think females display alpha behavior like "marking" and/or "humping". They believe that they are docile and attentive and do not participate in fighting for dominance. This couldn't be further from the truth!

In the 'dog pack' makeup, females usually rule the roost, they take life a bit more seriously, determine pecking order and compete to maintain and/or alter that order. The females are, as a result, are usually more independent, stubborn and/or territorial than their male counterparts. If you have several females, they may be more likely to have issues with each other than several boys living together. Most fights will usually break out between two females.

MALES: Boys on the other hand are usually more affectionate, exuberant, attentive and more desiring to please. They also tend to be more steadfast, reliable and less moody. They are typically more outgoing, more accepting of other pets, playful for more years and take quicker to children.

Most boys are easily motivated by food and praise

and are so eager to please that training is easy.

REMEMBER, Neutered males rarely exhibit undesirable secondary behavior such as "humping" or "marking" and lifting of legs. If neutered when young, less than 9 months of age, they tend not to have any of these male behaviors at all.

Boys tend to continue being fun and loving as they mature.

Girls tend to be more reserved or dignified as they age.

Both males and females make great companions and/or family members. Each dog will be an individual, so they may or may not follow these guidelines; however this is the trend we see in our dogs! We have more females on our farm versus males, however even our intact males used for for breeding are by far our favorites in terms of having a calmer people pleasing temperament. Our females are often very opiniated, and there are certain girls that don’t get along at all. The girls definitely want to rule the roost and are the most demanding of our attention!
